“Those of us who have been following Makara’s work for years already know that this hard working artist’s breathtaking technical skills come from exactly that: hard work. Makara has been a constant fixture at the Torpedo Factory and one of the artists who always seems to be there, always working, painting, scratch boarding, drawing, etc. and always refining her technical skills.
But by itself, superior technical muscles do not great art make; it must be coupled with intelligent composition, interesting ideas and concepts, and willingness to explore different avenues and areas for the skill to find new audiences.
This is what makes Makara special and this is what makes Masks an exhibition well beyond what eyes can see at Target Gallery. Masks is but the latest exploration by Makara of a new subject, a subject that allows her to tease the viewer with deep psychological question marks to the cerebral solar plexus.
It’s a brilliant show by a brilliant artist.”
